“No greater gift, no greater love”. This is the statement that Mr. Gerald Brock, a fire fighter from Darlington, South Carolina had stressed. He was once a son of a fire fighter as well, who was almost died. He was hit by a car when he was still a lad and was severely injured. He was saved by the fire fighter that day from death, which pushed him to help the firefighter and his father to do the service to help those others too, because of that accident happened. From then on, he realized of how fire fighters play a great role in the society and of how they offer their lives for the people to helped in times of incidents like they had. That’s what made Gerald as well, to render voluntary service to the humanity because of the second life he gains from above through the fire fighters.

According to Gerald, as one of the firefighters now, he said, “We lay our lives on the line for others.” This is the elevated idea he uttered which is in line with out biblical views of sacrificing oneself for the common good and safety for the majority. And in relation for the fire fighters’ profession, this one ignites to their good behavior of having the great love for their service and to make all people around them satisfied and well-respectful of the field they are in, which is very ideal and really shows the great love that also portrays of how God loves us.

Why we keep on pointing out the ideas even with the God’s words? It is because, all of the fire fighters are really in one thought with us, with their duties and responsibilities. They are working and having the service with the accordance of God, just to make their jobs well done and in safety. This is not just a faith which they are showing, but it is the lifestyle that they really have and the nature which they already acquired all through out of their profession. So, isn’t it great to this gift of service to show the great love they have for their society and for their work? It really is, I presume!

“He placed me in the area to help this boy.” This is what Lee Callaham, Assistant Chief, New England had sighed the time when he was once tested by the nature of the work he is in – Fire Fighter in profession. As what he shared in the world of fire fighters’, he was working with his landscaping field, when the fire incident happened on that same area, where he was on his job a teen boy was trapped in his on flame house and emanating heat on the area. That was a right timing for him to be there not to have another job in landscaping, but to render a severe service as a firefighter- to help people in times on fire. His presence in that area, made the incident solved immediately. To make the story short, Lee had helped and rescued the boy from the gateway of death, though the boy was really on the pick of death with the serious fire in the house of flame.

What makes this service in line with the dedication as the first pillar or edge of a Maltese Cross logo of fire fighter? It is the every service-oriented by Mr. Lee Callaham, which makes this a relevance to the field he is in. It is not easy to be in this field, because like those other professions, this also calls regardless of the time, place and incidents. The great thing in this citation or story is that, as a fire fighter, Mr. Lee portrayed the true dedication to his service and the passion of making his oath as one, to be ready to stretch out his hand to make the involved safe with all of his might and can do. He even added that the time when he saved the boy, it is not an accident or just a luck, but really a providence of God to have the boy saved. This is as well as proof of how a firefighter a prayerful and a great believer as well to the Almighty, which we all know will make him function as one accordingly.

Dedication, as one of what the fire fighters innately and obliged to live with, in the profession they have is really in great help to all of us in the community. Maltese cross is really that symbolic and that helpful to make every fire fighter we have not only New England, but of course to all through out the world.

Maltese Cross of Fire Fighters

In every thing we have in this modern time, there is always an aborigine. Even in anything we have or use this time, there is a legend behind or let say, a story which covers its total beau and existence. Even with our current times and for those things surrounds us there will always be a cause. In relation to the fire fighter’s, they have their own aborigine of all things or equipment they are using.

One of those things they are using or wearing now is the Maltese cross, which is having a clear, legendary and very inspiring story. Historically speaking, this is very legendary symbol, which is now considered as one of the vital things or tools being worn religiously and professionally with those other fields. What is Maltese cross anyway? And how is it that legendary and considered so valuable? For that, let me enumerate few points or fact regarding this symbol:

  • It is known as the Amalfi cross, which is identified as the symbol of the order of the Christian warriors known as Knights of Malta.
  • Its eight points represent the loyalty, piety, generosity, bravery, glory and honor contempt of death, helpfulness towards the poor and the sick as well as respect for the church.

With that symbolism it has, firefighters will really do their duties with full dedication and full hearted to give good service to the fellowmen. There are even lots of testimonies that would really inspire all of us to do the same, which is to give service rather than to receive service from others.

Like other profession, this Maltese cross is not just a logo or a sign, but to be the actualized unconditional service by our fire fighters to everybody. This one is could also be consider as one of the vital component of their duty wears, as those other professions do. If doctors have the stethoscope, teachers have the chalk and erasers, traffic aids have the whistles, and police have the revolvers; fire fighter could have this one too, the Maltese logo or very most thing needed on field. As what I’ve said, this is not just a logo, but it is already part of how they do, serve and help people while on duty. It is what reminds them of how they work, what they work for and to whom they should work to.

As for the record, as those every representation of each point edge shows, there is a corresponding story we could share with all of you, just to prove and to show the world, how heroism our fire fighters are serving for. We will have those for all of you to read sublimely and to reflect the soonest!

A profession is a vocation which is molded through specialized educational training. It is in varied forms and in various ways to attain. This might be in the easiest or hardest ways, but still, in the same way of making it rightly elevated and achievable goal to be in life. Many are in one thought of having a good career through good professional foundation. Among of those professional careers are being nurse, doctors, teachers, soldiers, policemen and the one in focus- Fire Fighter/s.

Fire fighter as a profession is on a pot of challenging field to take and that serious. Anyone in this profession must be vigilant and physically fit. On the record, it is seriously taken as a competitive field to take like that of an arm forces. People in this field are that strong, quick, and all the way initiative. Those are just simply traits or behavior a fire fighter must acquire, but those are vitally needed. Some few points to remember or to expect if you are in this field of profession are:

Prayerful being in all times.
Whole-heartedly ready for the duty regardless of the time.
Chooses no one when in duty of whom to save.
Vigilant and watchful around and flexible in all scenario of duties.
Bravery, heroism, dedication, service and sacrifices of time are really innate within.

Anywhere in the world, this profession is highly regarded and always one step to death-like field. As what the book of Answering the Call book I’ve read says, every fire fighter put on their mind when they are on the field of duty, that it might be their last day or last call to death with the inevitable clashing of flames that they would encounter along the way. They are like soldiers on war, who don’t have assurance of returning back alive.

They are also viewed as heroes as those soldiers or palpable politicians in the country. Why? It is because without hesitation, they run in when all the others are running out from flames and thick smokes. It is them who make sure that from all the corner of the house/s or areas, where flames are clashing high and thickly cleared; or if there is/are people still on sight that must be save as much as possible.

Choosing this field of profession is also a call. There are really people, who could feel that it might be the calling for them to be in flame, just to feel the full blast of happiness through helping and saving people from the possible danger. It is the calling for this profession- to willingly lay their lives for the safety of number of people who are in very hazardous blazes of fire. And are fire fighters contented and happy with this risky field they choose? Yes they are, I presume! It is because; it is where they will find complete feelings in doing their job and making it done safely without any complain. And the most is, they could bring cheers and comfort to all those in need. Thus, fire fighter is vitally calling profession as well.

FIRE FIGHTERS: A MIDST DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

“We need fire to mold our steel into tools; and tools into great usage for our life’s advancements.”

In the society, it is needed to have the full facilities and group of people who would maintain the peace and order as perfectly as possible. Thus, completing each man power and forces in all of the agencies in the community or area, is much needed. The most of it is that, it is very important as well to know who is who and what its function is. Thus, we usually have to define its mode, phases and terms according to its functions.

Just like the fire fighters we have in our societies, thought this term is really self-explanatory and its functions are really that vivid, I still would like to stressed it here more clearly what it is, its functions and the tools along with its priorities are for. Let me start it through differentiating fire fighters from fire fighting:

Fire Fighters are those people (men or women) engaging into the function of ceasing the blazes or flame of fire, which would create destruction and give hazards to the people in the area. These are the people who undergone Intensive trainings from their respective course/s and chosen field of duty.

Fire Fighting is the act of ceasing fire into big flames and even stopping it to harm people around. It is the main duties of the fire fighters, who are opt to have their lives into this line of profession and for the welfare of the community.

Those two terms are in one thought for the common good of the people if putting into action. Thus, upon having this work, fire fighters also in need for lots of tools while on duty and while fighting down the fire. Here are main tools they need on duty, that are in different variations:

  • Fire axes
  • Forcibly Entry tools
  • Rescue Saws
  • Rescue Tools
  • Hand tools

Along with those tools are the basin gadgets needed; the flame proofing, fire gloves, illumination kit, fire shelters, fire firefighter turnouts or clothing and Helmet, fire dex leather structure boots as well.

Those mentioned tools above are needed to make those fire fighters function well and for their duties as well, to be very effective and easily done in the right timing for the very appropriate time as needed. Each kind and functions for each tool might be varying, but those are having the same function as a whole- to save lives; the same way for those fire fighters; who are dedicating their lives into flame literally, just to save people a midst of fire from hazards. It is their role and responsibility. Having reviewed and observed few of their experiences and done operations, those are not easy and safe. But with all of their will and vision of having their societal-centered mission, they keep on going with this field of duty to visualize, act and do into duty everything they could, just to save lives and impart to all of us the idea of SERVICE and DEDICATION for what the duty calls.

Being a fire fighter a midst of duty is inevitably hazardous as well. There are instances that they will not be that safe, in behalf of their intensive trainings. It is normal, because no one is perfect. But it will be good to have someone on this field who is strong in mind, emotion, determination, fix goal and vision to serve and save people from life curtailing flames, and the most is that optimistic and firm enough with the faith in God to have the duty be done accordingly and in line with His will. Thus, I would conclude it that a fire fighter must be prayerful before and a midst on their fire duty!

Fire fighters are the professionals who are putting their lives into hazardous situation amidst fire blazing caused from varying reasons, and due also of our modernization today and industrialization that is excellently rising up. Indeed, with this vivid advancement we have, even fire fighters need to widen their horizon, mastery, skills and, if possible, would show their latent capability to serve people in the society and to reach the goal of preserving and giving welfare to the people.

As part of firefighters’ tools, there are fire knives which in a lot of uses for them. Those are in different color, forms and looks. But those have the same importance and regards. Here are few examples for those:

  • The Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife
  • Survival Knife
  • Army Folding Knife
  • Pocket Knife
  • Survival Knife

Those are use by the firefighters for making their operation or their duty easy; especially if they are in a heavy and great hazards while amidst duty. The question if it is illegal or not for them to bring, for me it is not. It is one of their essential tools, which is very useful to cut objects or things barred any one or who is in the middle of fire, car, and in any form of accidents. It could cut even seat belts and even window shield, if needed. As fire accident records show that, those fire fighters knives are in huge use for them in rescuing individual amidst fire, if ever being barred with any of debris or any leather things entrapment.

This may be just a simple thing for us, but on those fire fighters world, it is very significant and that legal to bring those with them on duty. As long as they will use it in goodness and not to do any foolishness using those knives, or causing any body to be hurt, it will still and always be legal for them to have those knives on their field of profession.

Helmets are known to be used on the head for mainly protection. It is a variation of a hat. In our different fields and profession, there are helmets or hats, which will be used in accordance on the field or work we are into. Each field has its own hat to use, just like the policemen, soldiers, cap for nurses, and firemen. The use of helmets or hats are in diverging ways also, if to be defined. It was said, just like the policemen, it would be used for a sign of respect, for the soldiers as a protection from bullets, and a lot to mention field and reasons of using it.

On the other hand, the fire helmet has its own use also for all the firemen. Historically speaking, firefighters have worn helmets to protect them from heat, cinders and falling objects. It is a must to use for them to be protected.

Helmet are could be made up by different materials, depending on its type. As what the other site had viewed, there are types of fire helmets, which are made of varying materials such as: Modern structural helmets that is intended especially for fires structure, and made of either thermoplastic or composite material. Another is the leatherhead, which is said to be the old style leather fire helmet used by many firefighters. It is also an international symbol of firefighters from the earlier years of firefighting.

There is also the brass eagle or beaver, which has the beaver ornament to represent the hard work, focused and dedication on mission of all firemen which all North America firefighters known for. The next helmet type is the Merryweather helmet, which are made of brass or nickel, but then changed to plastic to be lighter. Then the German DIN fire helmet which is designed according to the old German standard DIN 14940 dd. approx. 1972. It is made of aluminum alloy and painted with a yellow-green fluorescent color and provided with a white reflecting stripe and a black leather neck protection. And lastly, but not the least, the F1 Helmet, which is at the present, is using by known to 85 countries. It is a handmade from synthetic materials and covered with galvanized nickel. It provides protection from impact fire and electricity and that ideal to use compared to other kinds of helmets and made of.

These fire helmets may vary in made, forms or styles, but those are in one purpose or use which is to protect all of our firemen or firefighters from any fire calamity to will engage to. Thus, each fireman must bear in mind that this fire helmet, as part or one of their apparatus or armor while on duty of their obligation, must be worn well and be cared of, as our government is also providing that. As firemen, the duties would not only be on the fire calamities, but also to all other things which could help our countrymen and fellows to goodness. Fire helmets for firemen, or in which area of profession would it be, the protection is the core reason of making those. Thus, each of us must be wise and intelligent enough to use whatever resources we have. We should wear the helmet of solidarity and full protection all the time!
